Endometrial Ablation

Wear White with Confidence!

Do You Suffer From Heavy Periods?

The Solution Might Be an Endometrial Ablation

Does your period mean make you skip work or school? Do heavy periods interfere with your travel plans? It’s time to take control of your life! You have treatment choices - and the right one may be an endometrial ablation. The procedure takes only a few minutes and is done as an outpatient surgery. After an endometrial ablation, over 80% of women have either no periods or very light periods.

How Does it Work?

An endometrial ablation destroys the inside lining of the uterus. This lining is less than a quarter inch thick, but it is the layer that bleeds each month, causing your period. An ablation does not affect your hormones and does not cause menopause. Because this lining is also where a pregnancy grows, a woman should not have an endometrial ablation if she wants to become pregnant in the future.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will an ablation affect my hormones?

No.

Will I still have a period after an ablation?

Every woman is different. After the uterus heals, most women have either very light periods of no periods at all.

Can I still get pregnant after an ablation?

Yes, but it is unsafe to do so. An ablation needs to be done in combination with sterilization or other forms of birth control.

Is it safe not to have a period after an ablation?

Yes, since if the lining is destroyed, there is no blood building up that needs to be shed.

When can I go back to work after an ablation?

Most women go back to work 2 days after an ablation.

What will my recovery be like after an ablation?

Most women have very mild cramping for a few days and a blood-tinged vaginal discharge for several weeks.

What are my instructions after an ablation?

For two weeks after an ablation you cannot have sex, use tampons, take a bath, or go swimming. There are no exercise or lifting limitations.

Is endometrial ablation an option for all women?

No - not every woman is a good candidate for an endometrial ablation. You should not have an ablation if you wish to become pregnant in the future, if your uterus has large fibroids, or if your uterus measures too big or too small.

What are the risks of an ablation?

Your doctor will go over the risks with you. Like any surgical procedure, there are rare risks of complications.

Does the ablation make me more or less likely to get cancer?

Studies have shown that after an ablation women are slightly less likely to get uterine cancer.
